Living Above the Rock This is a 54-meter-long, slender, column-free structure. Located in the deep forests of Kita-Karuizawa, it stands quietly, appearing to float effortlessly among the trees.
The building’s defining characteristics—its elongated form and its elevation from the ground—allow it to coexist with the lush environment while minimizing ecological impact. By hovering above the earth, the architecture invites its inhabitants to fully embrace the blessings of nature, offering a living experience of exceptional quality.
The slender design allows one to feel the uninhibited expanse of nature from end to end. Following a topography with an elevation change of up to 10 meters, the environment reveals a shifting tapestry of expressions: the transition of seasons, the arrival of rain or snow, the play of light, and the embrace of soft mist. This linear configuration minimizes the need for tree removal, enabling a life that remains profoundly open to the surrounding forest.
The elevated structure protects the integrity of the soil while simultaneously shielding the interior from the elements. This design ensures a clean and comfortable environment—cool in summer and warm in winter—while providing safety from insects and wildlife. This duality of being completely open to nature yet securely protected creates a refined sense of comfort.
The site is punctuated by massive boulders marked with "joints"—fissures formed as magma cooled and solidified. It is a landscape defined by the overwhelming power of minerals shaped over tens of thousands of years. Conversely, the ground itself, composed of pyroclastic and debris flow deposits from Mt. Asama’s volcanic activity, is soft and delicate. Near the surface, the dense canopy blocks the sun, fostering a humid environment thick with ferns and shade-loving flora.
By distancing itself from the ground, the architecture escapes these damp conditions and ascends to capture the sunlight. Like a bridge spanning across giant rocks, the building transforms the rugged power of the site into a unique and extraordinary sanctuary for modern living.
Living above the rock -岩の上に暮らす- これは全長54mの細長い無柱の建物である。北軽井沢の深い森の中、木々の間に浮かぶようにひっそりと佇んでいる。 細長いこと。地面から浮いていること。これらにより、この敷地にある豊かな環境をできるだけ壊さずに、自然環境と共存し、最大限に環境の恩恵を享受する建築が生まれる。この建築は、訪れる人々に上質な暮らしの体験を提供する。 細長いということは、建物の端から端までのびのびとした自然を感じることができる。雨や雪など天気の変化や季節ごとの移ろい、降り注ぐ光やしっとりとした霧など、最大10mほどの高低差のある地形に応じて、自然は日々様々に異なる表情を見せてくれる。細長いカタチによって木々の伐採を最小限に抑えながら、自然環境におおらかに開いた暮らしを体験することができる。地面から浮いているということは、土壌を傷めず、同時に自然環境から身を守ることを可能にする。夏は涼しく、冬は暖かい。虫や獣から身を守ることができ、清潔である。自然環境 に最大限開きながら、同時に守られていること。この快適性が上質な暮らしを演出してくれる。 マグマが冷え固まったときにできたキズ(節理)のある巨大な岩があちこちに散在している。何万年もの時間をかけて形成された鉱物の圧倒的な力強さを持った敷地である。その一方で、浅間山の火山活動でできた火砕流 / 岩屑流の体積地土壌は軟弱で、かつ、地表近くは大きな樹木で日射が遮られシダなど日陰に強い草木がうっそうとしている。地面から距離を取り、 不快な環境から身を守る。日照を確保するように暮らしを宙に上げ、岩の上に架かる橋のよう な建築。たくましく巨大な岩が、この敷地ならではの上質で特別な暮らしを提供する。
